Bronze, Metals, & Materials FAQs

It can! And you know what? If it does, it’s normal. Here’s the deal: Bronze contains copper. Copper naturally reacts with air, moisture, sweat, skincare products, and other elements it encounters throughout the day. That reaction is called oxidation, and sometimes it can leave a temporary greenish tint where the jewelry touches your skin.
Whether or not your skin experiences a green tinge just depends on the pH of your skin! Some people experience it almost immediately. Others can wear bronze all day every day without seeing a trace of green. Your body chemistry, environment, how much you sweat, and what products are on your skin can all make a difference. Most important here is that the green tinge is harmless and washes off with soap and water.
P.S. If you’re bothered by your skin turning green but can’t put a finger on why, consider this your gentle nudge to dig into that feeling on a socioeconomic level.P.S.S. Want to learn more about bronze? Peep our Bronze is Better page to get the full dish.

That’s called oxidation! Because copper is an active metal, and in most bronze alloys, copper makes up a significant portion of bronze.
When bronze interacts with oxygen, moisture, sweat, and other environmental elements, the surface of the metal gradually changes. You might notice your jewelry becoming less shiny, developing a slightly darker or browner tone, or looking a little more aged and ancient.
That’s oxidation doing its oxidation thing. It is NOT an indication that your jewelry is low-quality or damaged. It’s just one of the characteristics of working with a raw metal.

The cool thing about bronze is that it isn’t a single recipe. It's a family of copper-based alloys, and the exact combination of metals can vary considerably depending on what the material is designed to do.
The yellow bronze we use in our jewelry is selected specifically for jewelry making. Its copper and zinc content creates the warm, bright yellow-gold appearance we love while giving us a durable metal that can stand up beautifully to everyday wear.
Most importantly: our bronze is nickel-free.
-
If you want to get technical, bronze, silver, and gold are all “waterproof” to some degree. Will affect your jewerly over a whole lifetime? Maybe – but it’s unlikely it will cause damage. Go swim with your jewelry, take a shower, workout – live your life in the jewelry you love. At the end of the day, you can always polish it back up.
-
Because: copper! That metallic “penny” smell you might notice while wearing bronze is associated with reactions between the copper-containing metal and compounds on your skin. Some people will never notice it; others might be much more sensitive to metallic smells.
If you absolutely hate that penny smell, bronze might not be your metal (and that’s okay).
-
Yes! One million times yes. Our bronze and sterling silver jewelry is nickel-free. Nickel is one of the most common causes of metal-related contact allergies, which is why it's a metal we intentionally avoid.
Bronze does contain copper, and sterling silver also contains a small percentage of copper. Copper allergies are possible, although much less common.
If you have a known metal allergy or sensitivity, please take that into consideration before purchasing.
-
It’s much less common than with bronze, but it’s possible, too! Remember that alloy talk? Sterling silver isn't pure silver – it typically contains 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, commonly copper. That added metal makes sterling silver durable enough for jewelry, but it also means oxidation and skin discoloration can occasionally happen (pretty rare though).

Because bronze is kind of a badass. It’s also my personal Roman Empire. It gives us the warm, yellow-gold appearance we love without requiring the price tag of solid gold – but the bigger reason we go to the mat for bronze is its durable and tough.
Gold and silver are relatively soft metals. Over decades of regular wear, they can develop scratches, dents, thinning, and other signs of use. Bronze is wildly durable and slow to wear down, which makes it especially well suited to the kind of jewelry we want to make.

Jewelry Care FAQs

As often as you want. Or as rarely as you want.
Some people polish their bronze every time they put it on because they love that bright, shiny finish. Personally, your dedicated designer only polishes hers once every six months (...if that).
Neither approach is wrong. If you like the darker, more lived-in look that our bronze alloy develops over time, let it happen. If you want your piece bright and shiny, give it a polish whenever it starts looking dull.Whether or not your skin experiences a green tinge just depends on the pH of your skin! For everyday polishing, we recommend a Sunshine® polishing cloth. It works beautifully for restoring shine and handling normal surface oxidation.
If you've worn a piece constantly without polishing it, you may eventually notice a chalky or scaly buildup, especially in spots like the inside of a ring. A polishing cloth may not have enough grit to tackle heavier buildup.
So, for a deeper clean, Brasso can help remove more stubborn oxidation. Want to get real creative? You can use household stuff like ketchup or lemon juice for the same job (because their acidity can help loosen oxidation).
Whatever method you choose, clean gently, rinse thoroughly when appropriate, and make sure your jewelry is completely dry afterward.
-
Sure! For significant buildup or oxidation, very fine steel wool can be used carefully on raw bronze.
Just remember that anything abrasive can affect the surface finish, so this is more of a heavy-duty option than an everyday polishing method.
-
Think: cool + dry + not your bathroom (if you can help it). Humidity speeds up oxidation, so bathrooms aren't an ideal long-term storage spot for bronze or silver jewelry. AKA, store your jewelry somewhere cool and dry.

Wow, that sounds terrifying. Forget the the dramatic name for a sec – “bronze disease” is a type of active corrosion to your bronze and does not have anything to do with a disease you can catch. Basically, “bronze disease” is a type of active corrosion involving chlorides that can affect copper-based metals and create powdery green corrosion that continues damaging the metal if left untreated.
But truthfully, it's usually only related to archaeological objects, artifacts, coins, and other older bronze objects – there’s not a lot of info out there about the alloy we use and bronze disease. Bronze disease is different from the normal darkening, tarnishing, or potential green shade you may see while wearing bronze jewelry.
Rings & Sizing FAQs
-
Ring sizing can be weirdly inconsistent, so we highly recommend having your finger professionally sized at a local jewelry store before ordering or purchasing a ring sizer you can use at home. Always check the individual product description before ordering – we make some adjustable and open-band designs may have their own sizing recommendations.
-
Not exactly. Some rings have adjustable designs (like the Sardine Ring) and have approximate sizing because they're designed to be gently adjusted until you find your ideal fit. That means you may need to make small adjustments when your ring arrives.
-
Long story short: Maybe. It depends on the ring.
Adjustable rings: Because sizing is approximate and the ring itself can be adjusted, adjustable styles like the Sardine Ring aren't eligible for a return or exchange because of sizing.
Closed-band rings: If you ordered the wrong size in a closed-band ring, reach out. Size exchanges may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
My hot tip is to get professionally sized before ordering so we can make the right size for you the first time.
Preorders & Production FAQs
-
When you preorder a Warm House piece, we're not pulling a finished piece off a warehouse shelf. Your order helps determine the materials we need, which are then ordered and cast through the small casting operations we work with. The casting process typically takes 4-8 weeks. Then, the finishing process usually takes another 1-2 weeks, followd by packing and shipping. That's why our preorder lead time is generally 8–12 weeks from order to shipment.
-
That’s showbiz, baby. More seriously, because small-batch jewelry takes time.
Your piece moves through casting, fabrication, finishing, packing, and shipping – often across multiple small businesses (the small casting houses we work with) rather than one giant production facility. The 8-12 week lead time gives us enough room to make each batch properly instead of rushing the process.
-
If your preorder hasn't shipped within 12 weeks and you haven't received an email from us with an update, please contact warmhousedesigns@gmail.com so we can figure it out for you
Shipping FAQs
-
Domestic shipping is a flat $10.00 via USPS Ground Advantage. Once USPS receives your package, Ground Advantage typically takes approximately 2–5 days and includes tracking and up to $100 of insurance. Because many Warm House pieces are preorders, we don't currently offer Priority or Express shipping.
-
Items specifically labeled Ready to Ship in the product description ship within 21 days. If 21 days have passed and you haven't received a shipping update, email warmhousedesigns@gmail.com.
-
Yes! International shipping is available to all countries at a flat rate of $35.00. International orders may require an additional 3-4 weeks of handling before shipment. We use FedEx and UPS for international orders, and tracking is included. Insurance coverage varies by carrier. Please note that customers are responsible for any duties, taxes, customs charges, or other fees assessed after the package has shipped.
-
For preorders and new product launches, we unfortunately can't accommodate shipping-address changes due to the volume of orders processed during preorder launches. Please double-check your shipping information before submitting your order.
Returns, Exchanges, Cancellations & Refunds FAQs
-
Because our jewelry is made in small batches and often specifically produced for preorder customers, we don't accept general returns.
Returns are accepted if:
Your item arrives damaged.
You receive a different item than the one you ordered.
If either happens, email warmhousedesigns@gmail.com within one week of receiving your package. We may ask for photos or request that the item be returned before resolving the issue.
-
Usually, no. We only offer exchanges if you receive an item different from what you ordered, with one exception: incorrectly sized closed-band rings may be considered for a size exchange on a case-by-case basis. Adjustable rings aren't eligible for size-based exchanges.
-
Contact us or email directly at warmhousedesigns@gmail.com within one week of receiving your order and let us know what happened. Please include photos if possible. Depending on the issue, we may ask you to return the piece so we can inspect it.
-
Ooooops. Sorry, friend. That's on us. Email warmhousedesigns@gmail.com within one week of receiving your package, and we'll work with you to make it right. We may request photos and/or ask you to return the incorrect item.
-
You sure can – within the first two weeks after placing your order. After two weeks, your jewelry has entered production, and the order can no longer be canceled.
-
You may be eligible for a refund in two circumstances:
Your order hasn't shipped within 12 weeks and you haven't received prior communication from us explaining the status or delay.
Your jewelry has a production defect that causes it to break or become nonfunctional.
Because handmade jewelry gets worn in the real world (where accidents, wear, and life happen) broken or nonfunctioning pieces are reviewed on a case-by-case basis to determine whether the issue resulted from a production defect. If you believe you're eligible for a refund, contact warmhousedesigns@gmail.com.
